Too Stiff for Pilates? Why You Don't Need to Be Flexible to Start

"I'd love to try Pilates, but I'm far too stiff."
If that sounds familiar, you're definitely not alone.
People often think they need to become more flexible before joining a Pilates class.
But that's a bit like saying you need to get fit before you start exercising.
You don't.

Pilates isn't about touching your toes
Pilates isn't a flexibility competition.
We all have different bodies, different movement histories and different ranges of motion.
Your goal isn't to make your body look exactly like the person on the mat next to you. It's to work with the body you have and gradually improve how it moves.
Why do we become stiff?
There are lots of reasons.
Spending long periods sitting at a desk, driving, repeating the same movements, being less active, previous injuries and simply getting older can all influence how mobile we feel.
You might particularly notice stiffness through your hips, shoulders or spine.
Pilates introduces controlled movement through different ranges and directions, encouraging you to explore movement rather than forcing your body into uncomfortable positions.

Mobility and flexibility aren't quite the same thing
People often use the words interchangeably, but there's a useful distinction.
Flexibility generally refers to how much a muscle can lengthen, whereas mobility involves your ability to actively move and control a joint through its available range.
Pilates works on more than simply stretching.
We want you to have strength and control within your range of movement, too.
What if everyone else is more flexible than me?
This is another common worry.
A good Pilates class shouldn't expect every person to perform an exercise identically.
At Paragon Pilates, we teach small groups because it allows our instructors to see how individuals are moving and provide alternatives or corrections where needed.
You work with your body — not somebody else's.
What if I haven't exercised for years?
That's okay too.
You don't have to get yourself "Pilates ready".
If you're completely new, our beginner options are designed to introduce the fundamentals gradually and help you build confidence before progressing.
You can also start with private sessions if you'd feel more comfortable getting some individual guidance first.
Start where you are
You don't need to be bendy.
You don't need a strong core.
You don't need to know the exercises.
And you certainly don't need to be able to touch your toes.
You just need to start at a level that's appropriate for you.
If stiffness has been putting you off Pilates, get in touch with us at Paragon Pilates. We'll help you find a supportive place to begin.
