Ever wondered what your Pilates instructor is really thinking during class?

Whether you're a Pilates beginner or you've been joining us on the mat or reformer for years, there are a few things we wish every client knew.

From shaking legs to those endless reminders to breathe, there's often more going on in a Pilates class than meets the eye!

So, we're letting you in on a few little secrets from behind the scenes at Paragon Pilates...

1. Slower Doesn't Mean Easier 🐢

If you've ever heard your instructor say, "Slow it down a little," just as you're starting to feel the burn, you'll know exactly what we're talking about!

One of the biggest misconceptions about Pilates is that slower movements are easier. In reality, slowing things down can make an exercise significantly more challenging.

When you move slowly and with control, your muscles often have to work harder to stabilise your body throughout the movement. There's less opportunity to rely on momentum, and you're encouraged to really focus on how you're moving.

That's why we place so much emphasis on control rather than speed.

Our top tip: Next time you're tempted to rush through those last few repetitions, try slowing down instead. You might be surprised by how much harder it feels!

2. Shaking Is Completely Normal! 🔥

We've all been there. You're halfway through an exercise, everything feels fine, and suddenly your legs start trembling!

Don't worry, a little shaking during Pilates is very common.

Muscle shaking can happen when you're challenging your strength, stability or muscular endurance, particularly when you're working muscles in ways they're not used to.

It doesn't necessarily mean you're doing anything wrong, and it's certainly nothing to be embarrassed about.

That said, shaking isn't something you need to aim for or push through at all costs. If you're losing control of the movement, feeling uncomfortable or becoming overly fatigued, it's absolutely fine to take a break or ask for a modification.

Our top tip: Don't compare yourself to the person next to you. Everyone's body responds differently, and progress looks different for everyone.

3. Your Breathing Really Does Matter 🌬️

We know, we know... we're always reminding you to breathe!

But there's a good reason for it.

Breathing is an important part of Pilates, helping you coordinate your movements, manage effort and avoid unnecessary tension.

It's surprisingly common to hold your breath when concentrating on a challenging exercise. You might not even realise you're doing it until your instructor gives you a gentle reminder!

In Pilates, we often encourage you to breathe into the sides and back of your ribcage, allowing your breath to support your movement rather than fighting against it.

And no, you don't need to get every breath perfectly timed with every movement.

Our top tip: If you're ever unsure when to inhale or exhale, focus on keeping your breath flowing naturally. Your instructor can help you refine the technique as you progress.

4. We're Not Just Counting Your Reps... We're Watching HOW You Move 👀

Okay, we are counting your repetitions. Well, most of the time! 😉

But here's a little secret: we're much more interested in the quality of your movement than the number of repetitions you complete.

Your Pilates instructor is constantly observing your alignment, control, breathing and how your body responds to different exercises.

We're looking for those little adjustments that can make a big difference.

Sometimes that means asking you to make a movement smaller, slow things down or change your position slightly.

And yes, occasionally we lose count because we're so focused on helping you move well!

The beauty of Pilates is that it's not about doing as many repetitions as possible. It's about making each movement purposeful.

Our top tip: Focus on how an exercise feels and how well you can control it, rather than rushing to finish the set.

5. The Hardest Version Isn't Always the Best Version 💪

This is a big one!

There's a common misconception that progressing in Pilates means choosing the hardest exercise, adding more resistance or keeping up with the person next to you.

But that's not what Pilates is about.

Sometimes a smaller movement is more challenging. Sometimes lighter springs on the reformer require greater control and stability. And sometimes the most beneficial thing you can do is take a modification.

Every body is different, and what feels challenging for one person might feel completely different for someone else.

At Paragon Pilates, we want you to feel confident working at a level that's right for you.

Taking a modification isn't a step backwards. It's a way of making sure you're getting the most out of your practice.

Our top tip: Never be afraid to ask for an alternative exercise. Your instructor would much rather help you find the right variation than see you struggling through something that doesn't feel right.

And One Little Bonus... We Really Do Love Seeing Your Progress! ❤️

One of the best things about being a Pilates instructor is watching our clients grow in confidence.

And we're not just talking about mastering an advanced exercise.

Sometimes it's noticing that your balance has improved, that you're moving more comfortably, or that an exercise you once found difficult now feels easier.

Sometimes it's simply hearing that you're feeling stronger, moving better or enjoying your classes.

Those little wins matter, and we notice them!

Remember, Pilates Isn't About Perfection

Whether you join us for Mat Pilates or Reformer Pilates, the most important thing is that you're moving in a way that feels good for your body.

You don't need to be the strongest, the most flexible or the most experienced person in the room.

You just need to show up, be curious about how your body moves and enjoy the process.

And the next time your instructor asks you to slow down, reminds you to breathe or suggests a modification, you'll know there's a good reason behind it!

We look forward to seeing you on the mat or reformer soon!
